Asymmetric Wi-Fi 6 setups — fast 5 GHz backhaul, weak or crowded 2.4 GHz for IoT — strand Matter accessories that only join 2.4 GHz. Phones on 5 GHz still commission, but plugs and hubs miss each other operationally.
Symptoms
Setup fails at final step on Wi-Fi 6 mesh, worked on old router. Meross, Tapo, Eve Wi-Fi SKUs timeout; laptops fine. Moving device next to router helps briefly.
Stabilize 2.4 GHz for Matter
Give IoT devices a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID or disable band steering during setup. Lower 2.4 GHz channel width to 20 MHz in dense areas. Wire primary hub to Ethernet. Turn off Wi-Fi 6-only features on 2.4 radio if router allows AX on 2.4 toggle for legacy IoT. Update mesh nodes as a set.
Verify
Commission one Matter plug on 2.4 GHz; control from hub app after phone leaves room.
