Sleepy end devices — contact sensors, many door locks, some buttons — wake briefly, send data, and sleep again to save battery. That is normal. A detach-and-reattach loop is not: the device joins, drops, rejoins, and burns battery while your automations fire twice or not at all.
Loops usually mean the sleepy child cannot keep a stable parent router, not that the battery device is defective on day one.
Recognize a loop vs. weak battery
Loops show in hours or days on fresh batteries. Voltage looks fine in the vendor app but parent changes constantly.
Automations log duplicate triggers or missed triggers for the same sensor. Home apps may show the device Updating every few minutes.
A loop often started after moving a border router or adding a metal door with the sensor mounted on the moving leaf.
Stabilize parents before replacing hardware
Identify powered Thread routers within two rooms of the looping device. Sleepy end devices should not parent to other battery devices — if diagnostics show that, add a mains-powered router nearby.
Reduce distance and metal: move the sensor slightly, add a Thread plug or bulb as a repeater, or relocate a HomePod mini to the hallway that needs coverage.
Match ecosystems during testing: troubleshoot from the app that commissioned the device until the loop stops, then re-enable multi-admin sharing.
Update sleepy device firmware from the OEM app. Loop fixes often ship quietly for specific sensor revisions.
Break the loop operationally
Remove the device from automations temporarily so rapid detach events do not cascade into scenes.
Delete ghost entries in Home apps, then factory reset the sensor per the manufacturer guide — stand next to a stable border router during rejoin.
Reboot border routers in sequence after rejoin, not before, so the sensor attaches once to a calm mesh.
If the device supports adjustable poll intervals, avoid aggressive settings from third-party hubs until stability returns.
When loops signal wrong tool for the job
A garage door sensor on a steel door at the property edge may need a dedicated Thread router in the garage, not a fifteenth reset of the sensor.
Medical or security environments should not rely on DIY loop suppression — use vendor support channels.
Confirm the loop ended
Graph mentally: note parent and last-seen time every hour for a day. A healed sleepy device shows long sleep gaps with the same parent, predictable automation triggers, and stable battery percentage in the OEM app.
